A Far from Frosty Reception
Yesterday I attended my first Victorian frost fair! Set in the house and grounds of Valence House in Dagenham, it was certainly a wintery day for it. I was glad to be selling books and Christmas cards with a friend inside the house although plenty of people braved the conditions with festive huts outside as well. I was happy to sell some books but also had a lot of opportunities to share my Pen to Print experience and encourage other authors and budding writers. I was even asked to speak at a local women's group, which is something I haven't done before.
As well as promoting and selling A Silent Song, it was a great experience and I realised how much I have missed local events during the pandemic. The arctic conditions meant a warming suasgae roll and doughnuts were obligatory and I also took time to visit other stalls, inluding other authors, Christmas gifts and beauty products. Being in the house itself meant we had a great opportunity to explore the history and artefcats in between selling. We were also privileged not only to see Santa but also several visiting Victorians including Queen Victoria and Prince Albert! I hope there are more such events in the future and would encourage anyone to support their local community events too. Maybe i'll see you at one soon!
